Moving from another podcast app

Almost every podcast app exports an OPML file of your shows — Overcast, Pocket Casts, AntennaPod, Castro and Podcast Addict all do. Open Settings → Subscriptions → Import from another app and choose it. Every show arrives at once, folders included.

One honest limitation: OPML carries shows and folders only. No podcast app exports playback positions, so you start each show where it is now rather than where you left it.

How the ad skipping works

The Skip Ad button is always there. When the app has worked out where a break is, it shows how long that break runs and skips exactly that far. When it hasn’t, it jumps to the next natural gap in the audio — and every time you correct it, it remembers.

Detection runs on your device, on the copy of the episode you downloaded. It is good, not perfect: expect it to find most breaks and land within a few seconds of the edges. Skipping something you wanted to hear is the failure worth avoiding, so it is tuned to skip slightly less rather than slightly more.

Automatic skipping is off by default. Turn it on if you would rather not press anything; it only fires where the app is confident, and always says what it skipped, with an undo.

An episode won’t download

Automatic downloads are Wi-Fi only, and they also decline personal hotspots and Low Data Mode. The row says which of those is the reason. If you want it anyway, tap the download button on the episode — asking explicitly allows cellular.

If a download looks stuck, the circular arrow on the row restarts it immediately.

Where did my downloaded episode go?

When a newer episode of a show arrives, the one it replaces is deleted — that is what keeps the app from filling your phone. Two things are never removed: anything you starred, and anything you started but haven’t finished. If you would rather unfinished episodes were cleared too, turn off Keep unfinished episodes in Settings.

Syncing between iPhone and iPad

Subscriptions, positions, your queue and ad marks sync through your own private iCloud, with both devices on the same Apple Account. Downloads do not sync — audio is fetched per device, which is quicker than copying it around.

A position arriving from your other device never moves the playhead while you are listening. It applies when you are not.

Adding a private or paid feed

Paste the address into Search. Patreon, Supporting Cast and similar feeds work normally. Addresses containing an access token are kept out of every log and diagnostics screen.

A show only shows recent episodes

“Kept forever” means kept from when you subscribed. Most publishers serve only the last few hundred episodes in their feed, and nothing can retrieve what a publisher no longer offers. From the moment you subscribe, everything that arrives is kept.
